Love at First Voice: Cinematic Virtual Love and Invisibility
This video essay is a comparative analysis of three popular science-fiction films: Spike Jonze's Her, Alex Garland's Ex Machina and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049. I use Guy Debord's theory of the society of the spectacle to analyze how the films differently present virtual love relationships between humans and Artificial Intelligent systems, focusing on the uniqueness of Her, in the way it goes beyond Debord's spectacle and presents a narrative in which social and intimate relations are mediated not by imagery, but by the very lack of it.
